Windows 95/98

Creating A New DUN Configuration:

On the Desktop, double click the My Computer icon.

Double click the Dial-Up Networking folder.

The Dial-Up Networking window opens.

Double click the Make New Connection icon.

The first time you make a new connection a screen appears:

Click the Next button to continue.

Note:  If you've made connections previously, continue to the next window.

Type a name of the computer you are dialing  =  Enter a name for the connection.  You can call it the name of your ISP.

Select a device  =  Select the modem from the drop-down menu.  There should only be one listed.

Click the Configure button.

A window appears:

Maximum speed  =  Set the speed to 57600.

Click the OK button to save the changes.

We return to the Make New Connection window.

Click the Next button to continue.

Area code  =  Leave the area code field blank.

Telephone number  =  Enter the Access number you use to connect to the Internet.  This is provided by your Internet service provider.  Enter any other numbers necessary to connect.  For example, if you have 10-digit dialing in your area, enter the area code along with the phone number.  If you have Call Waiting and would like to disable it while you're on the Internet, enter "*70," before the access number, i.e., *70,3125555555.  If you're in a hotel and need to dial a "9," to get an outside line, enter it as well.

Country or region code  =  Don't worry about this field.

Click the Next button to continue.

You're done with the initial configuration.

Click the Finish button.

We return to the Dial-Up Networking window.

Double click the connection.

The Connect To window appears.

User name  =  Enter the username provided by your Internet service provider.
Password  =  Enter your password.

If you'd like to save the password, check the box Save password.

Note:  If you modified the username and/or password here, Windows will only save the changes if you connect to the Internet.  If you don't connect, Windows will revert back to the old settings.

Create a shortcut:

You can choose to put a shortcut on your Desktop.  To do this, do the following:

Right click the connection and select Create Shortcut from the menu.

The following window will pop-up to tell you that you can't create a shortcut here.  You don't want it here, anyway.

Click the Yes button to put the shortcut on your Desktop.

The shortcut will look like the picture below:

Click on it to connect to the Internet.  Open your browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) to surf or your e-mail program (Outlook Express, Netscape Mail, etc.) to get your e-mail.
