Creating A New DUN Configuration :

Note:  The easiest way to create a new DUN connection is through the Internet Connection Wizard (inetwiz).  

If you do not have this Assistant, you can use the "Make New Connection" option within Dial-Up Networking.

On the Desktop, click the Start button and select Settings -> Dial-Up Networking from the menus.

The Dial-Up Networking window appears.

Double click the icon Make New Connection.

If you've never created a dial-up networking connection before, the following screen will appear:

Click the Next button to continue.

Note:  If you have created a connection previously, continue to the next screen.

The Make New Connection window appears.

Type a name for the computer you are dialing  =  Enter a name for the connection.  It can be the name of your ISP.

Select a device  =  Select the modem from the drop-down list.  There should only be one listed.

Click the Configure button. 

Maximum speed  =  Set the speed to 57600.

Click the OK button to save the changes.

We return to the Make New Connection window.

Click the Next button to continue.

Area code  =  Leave the area code field blank.

Telephone number  =  Enter the Access number you use to connect to the Internet.  This is provided by your Internet service provider.  Enter any other numbers necessary to connect.  For example, if you have 10-digit dialing in your area, enter the area code along with the phone number.  If you have Call Waiting and would like to disable it while you're on the Internet, enter "*70," before the access number, i.e., *70,3125555555.  If you're in a hotel and need to dial a "9," to get an outside line, enter it as well.

Country or region code  =  Don't worry about this field.

Click the Next button to continue.

You're done with the initial configuration.

Click the Finish button.

Right click the connection and select Create Shortcut from the menu.

The following window will pop-up to tell you that you can't create a shortcut here.  You don't want it here, anyway.

Click the Yes button to put the shortcut on your Desktop.

The shortcut will look like the picture below:

Click on it to connect to the Internet.  Open your browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) to surf or your e-mail program (Outlook Express, Netscape Mail, etc.) to get your e-mail.

There are a few additional settings we need to configure.

Right click the connection and select Properties from the menu.

The following window opens:

Select the General tab.

Phone number:

Uncheck the box Use area code and Dialing Properties.

Select the Networking tab.

Allowed network protocols:

Click the TCP/IP button.

The TCP/IP Settings window appears.

Select the option Specify name server addresses.

Primary DNS  =  Enter the primary DNS server address of 209.210.176.8.
Secondary DNS  =  Enter the secondary DNS server address of 209.210.176.8.

Click the OK button to save the changes and to close the window.

We return to the previous window.

Select the Security tab.

Authentication:

User name  =  Enter the dial-up username provided by your ISP.
Password  =  Enter the dial-up password.

If you'd like you can use Internet Explorer to open the connection for you.  If you'd like to do this, do the following:

Select the Dialing tab.

Check the box This is the default Internet connection.

Select the option Always dial my default connection.

Click the OK button to save the settings and to close the window.
